Dander is the microscopic flakes of skin and protein your pet sheds constantly, and it is small enough, light enough and sticky enough to ride air currents directly into your aircon's intake. Once there, it settles on the mesh filter, mingles with dust, pollen, cooking residue and whatever the haze season has dragged in from across the region, and forms that grey felt you see when you finally remember to clean it. The aircon then does what aircons do. It pulls air through the filter, cools it, and blows it back out. Anything fine enough to slip through the mesh, and a great deal does, gets redistributed around the room. This is the part that bothers me. We treat air conditioning as if it cleans the air, when in reality a standard split unit is more like a fan with a cold drink in its hand. It moves air. It does not purify it.
